Water Monitors are a large, generally tame varanid. Because of their large size (not just in length,
but also in weight), water monitors require large enclosure. This species has the potential to reach
9' and weigh in at over 70lbs, although they average about 7-7.5' for males and 6-7' for females.
To go along with their large size, water monitors have a quick growth rate and love to eat. I had a
baby for about a month that grew 3-4" within the time I had it. I found it a home due to a new
unexpected arrival in the family, but I hope to get more soon and raise them up. Water monitors
will accept mice, rats, fish, shrimp, snails, ground turkey, crickets, crabs, worms, roaches, and
some of the bigger ones can even take rabbits. Because of their fast growth rate, it is very
important that these animals receive a supplement, I use Miner-All with all of my herps. Water
monitors require high humidity and very large waterbowls, they must be large enough for the animal
to soak in. Day time temperatures of 80-95F with a basking spot of 130F works well. I would not
advise night time temperatures to drop below 75F. As a substrate, cypress mulch works very well
because it holds humidity well.
