Dumeril's monitor attains an average length of about 4', but have been
known to get over 5'. At birth these varanids are small and have
orange or red heads and their body has yellow and black stripes. As
the animal ages, it's color dulls and becomes black and brown,
although, some specimen's stripes become white and black. These
varanids are arboreal, but also love to swim. Their enclosure should
include many branches of appropriate size and they should have access
to a large water bowl. Also, these animals require high humidity,
so misting their enclosure every other day is helpful. A temperature
range of about 80-95F with a basking spot of about 120-135F is good
for these monitors. Night time temps should not drop below 75F.
Because of their aquatic nature, Dumeril's monitors will accept fish,
crab, and shrimp, along with mice, insects, worms, snails, and eggs.
Like all monitors, Dumeril's monitors need a varied diet and a
calcium/vitamin supplement, I recommend Miner All. This species of
monitor can become very tame and is a great choice. If you decide to
purchase one, be sure it is CB. Babys are best to start with since
they are not yet set in their ways, but, because of their nice
coloring, they will sometimes cost a little more than a juvenile or
adult.
